December 16, 1971: Daniel "Took the oath" at NRTC, Chicago.

February 26, 1972: Our son Daniel said he accepted the Lord into his heart on this date while at a Navigator's conference.

[ March 9, 1972: Daniel drove or rode with someone to "McCormick Place" in Chicago where there was some big gathering of Believers; he sang 'Amazing Grace' with great conviction, praise and thankfulness that night!]

March 26, 1972: Daniel went to Great Lakes Naval Training Center for his boot camp training (where I had been 29 years earlier).

May 26, 1972: Daniel graduated from "Boots" and we were in attendance at the ceremony. Old memories were renewed in my mind of the days I spent there.

May 31, '72 to June 15, '72: Daniel at home after graduation and before placement.

June 15, '72: Daniel sent to San Diego to BE/EP School.

September 27, 1972: Daniel passed all his training courses in San Diego and came home to help us move back to California [which he had little idea about how soon the author wanted to leave until after arriving home!]. He knew he was to be assigned to the U.S.S. Chicago (CG-11) upon his return to California.

October 14, 1972: Celebrated Daniel's 20th birthday at an Anaheim restaurant, but this was before we'd finally decided we wouldn't continue looking for a home in the Orange County area any longer.

October 15, 1972: Took Daniel to Long Beach Naval Station to board his ship.

The Chicago was already in dry dock. At a much later date, the Chicago sailed from Long Beach to San Diego and remained ported there (at North Island NAS) from at least DEC 1973 until MAY 1974. During that time, Daniel often flew from San Diego to LAX (or to the Burbank Airport) to be with his family in Granada Hills, CA.

August 15, 1973: Daniel baptized as a believing adult at Fort MacArthur[2] by an Army Chaplain, Major Steffy, of San Diego.

Fort MacArthur was in San Pedro, CA, not far from Long Beach, where his ship was at the time. The baptism took place in the Base swimming pool while it was full of people, most of whom were oblivious to their presence. There were, however, some curious kids who'd gathered around them, wondering why three men were wearing clothes or robes in the pool.

Footnotes

1[Return to Text]   There was extensive damage to multiple homes and also damage to an elementary school. REFERENCE: The Daily Herald, 17 JUL 1972. On 28 SEP 72, the day before flying back home to IL, I was still enjoying life in San Diego, when a tornado struck two of the base housing areas at Great Lakes N.T.C. and 18 people were injured. I didn't find that news item until this year (2022).
