In general, both numbers below have a presence on the Net because the same kind of people who propagate email hoaxes without ever doing any research into the claims of such rumors, have also been duped by those who've either deluded themselves into actually believing what they write about this, or enjoy that they've been able to fool others into accepting their 'bad math' as being true.

 

3.14460 5511 ... (or: 4 / Sq.Root(phi); where phi=[Sq.Root(5)+ 1] / 2)

This number is a result of claims that the world should have a value for Pi that is based on something more closely associated with 'Nature' such as the Fibbonaci series; i.e., 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, etc. Thus, the reason this group's incorrect formula for Pi includes the 'Golden Ratio' number [often represented by the Greek letter phi (φ)]; which is:

phi = [(√5) + 1] / 2 = 1.6180339887...

The relationship between phi and the Fibonacci Series is also examined in this reference[1]. Therefore, much of the papers and emails from this group are loaded full of good data about the Golden Ratio (phi), Fibonacci Numbers and other truthful statements, before they simply 'slip in' their formula for obtaining Pi that has no actual basis in reality! For example, their papers may have grandiose titles beginning with words like: "A closed-form-derivation of pi, by..." and you expect this to mean it will have some kind of proof showing how they arrived at their value. But it does not. Here's a diagram from one of their papers

However, there is already an existing relationship in the field of trigonometry between Pi and Phi:
